Design and Technology (DT) at Portsdown Primary School and Early Years

At Portsdown Primary School and Early Years, children are taught to select and use appropriate tools safely and effectively to make a product. In all areas of Design and Technology the children are encouraged to consider the effectiveness of their designs and requirements of
the product. Every child will have the opportunity to learn and extend their understanding, experience and application in the use
of technology, including computing technology in as wide a variety of situations as possible, in order that their skills may be utilised in a full cross-curricular sense.

At Portsdown Primary School and Early Years, we encourage the inclusion of cooking skills and have a fantastic kitchen that classes can use to support their experience of cooking. Using this facility, the children will design, make and evaluate food projects and take part in tasting of food sessions.

Design and Technology (DT) in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):  the Nursery and Year R

DT in the Nursery and Year R is a key part of the ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ area of the EYFS Curriculum (although there are also key links to the Physical Development and Maths areas of the EYFS Curriculum).  Within the provision at Portsdown Primary School and Early Years, the children in EYFS will have opportunities to explore the making of products using a wide variety of materials. They will cut, stick, draw and paint. The chance to practise their cutting skills is permanently on offer. The children will be encouraged to develop their use of a range of small tools, including scissors, paintbrushes and cutlery. The children will also be provided with opportunities to prepare food, including the cooking of food.
